I guess we don’t shy away from all the corny jokes geeks make when the company seems to think that putting its customers through the near-constant ordeal of switching between chat apps is an acceptable user experience. For individual users, there are not many changes. There is a new sequence of splash pages when opening the “new” app for the first time and a prompt reminder that guides users to learn more Google Meet help page. Other than that, if you used Duo for encrypted video chats between two people, you will now use Meet. You will continue to receive calls through your phone number, and if you enable it, it will receive your Gmail address.

If you’re signed into Google Meet (formerly Google Duo) with a paid Google Workspace account, you’ll see the app’s interface as shown in the above tweet from Android Police founder Artem Russakovskii.

If you’re using the workspace-oriented Google Meet app, its app will remain for now while retaining the modified “Meet (original)” moniker. However, this app will be discontinued at a later time.

If you receive the updated Duo/Meet app from the Play Store, you may see the app listed as “Google Meet (formerly Google Duo)”, but it’s pretty much the same app as before. We offloaded the new Duo/Meet app and were able to open it through the Google Play Store as the app was still feeding us the name Google Duo. This may be the case for most of the other users over the next few weeks as people update on different tracks with different versions.
